Approach

Nashville Counseling Psychologist

In a nutshell, my work is influenced by psychodynamic and existential theories and draws upon modern analytic, cognitive behavioral and Ericksonian strategies.  I think our genes and temperament along with our early experiences ultimately shape how we go about understanding and interacting with others and our environment.  This can lead to both satisfying and fulfilling life experiences and, at worst, significant challenges.

In short, I think good psychotherapy helps us:

  • Grow self awareness
  • Develop new understandings
  • Learn new ways of relating with ourselves and others
  • Make choices that are consistent with our values
  • Deepen our capacity for empathy
  • Act upon our environment in new ways that lead to new experiences

I think we all have strengths, and I think it's important for us to notice them, utilize them and build up upon them.

Ultimately, I think psychotherapy can be life changing when someone gets connected with the right therapist and is ready to get to work.
